"The Provincial Government is committed to facilitate the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through provision of basic amenities and services which are financially and environmentally sustainable. The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (GoKP), in line with the National Transport Policy 2018 and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, is cognizant of the social, environmental, and economic costs of growing number of cars, private and public transport use in urban areas/major cities and is therefore striving its best to address the urban mass transit issues. As a first step towards its resolve, the government of KP has established Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority (KPUMA) and has been mandated to plan, establish, and regulate urban mass transit systems in the province. The Authority has already completed and operationalized the BRT system in Peshawar and is planning to initiate such systems in Mingora Swat and Abbottabad and other cities with financial assistance from Asian Development Bank (ADB).
A safe and secure transportation system is extremely important for KP economic progress and improvement of quality of life. The mobility challenges posed by rapid urbanization and increase in population can be addressed by connecting people, regions, and communities to one another. KPUMA is making its best efforts to improve road safety, increase public transport coverage provide quality service, and reduce environmental pollution. The Authority has successfully implemented Mass Transit System (BRT) in Peshawar. Over the next five years, it will be ensured that our plans for the transport sector are integrated & sustainable, and that the transportation system is safe and reliable in facilitating trade and movement of people and goods in an efficient way.
